Leveraging extensive data from several complementary population- and clinic-based cohort studies, the Bordeaux team, within the Bordeaux Population Health Research Centre (BPH), explores the determinants of common, age-related vascular and neurological diseases, with a particular focus on identifying novel genetic determinants for stroke and MRI-markers of cerebrovascular disease and brain aging.

BPH is a Joint Unit (Unité Mixte de Recherche, U1219) between University of Bordeaux (UBx) and the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM). UBx is a multidisciplinary, research-focused and international university counting about 53 000 students and 5 600 staff. Ranked among the top universities in France (# 194 in the 2016 Shanghai ranking and # 3 in France), UBx was awarded the label “Campus of Excellence” by the French government, and offers innovative educational programs and high level research with an international scope.

Bordeaux University Hospital Centre (CHUB), linked to UBx, ranks third among French university hospitals in terms of activity and is one of the leading French sites for acute stroke care.

Role in the project

The UBx PRESTIGE-AF team is responsible for Work package 4 on “genetics for improved risk stratification” in patients with atrial fibrillation and a history of Intracerebral Haemorrhage. This WP aims to explore whether genetic variants facilitate risk stratification of ICH patients into risk categories for risk of incident IS or ICH recurrence.

The UBx PRESTIGE-AF partner has led several large collaborative projects on genetic determinants of stroke and cerebrovascular disease, both in a population-based longitudinal setting and in a hospital-based setting, within the International Stroke Genetics Consortium (ISGC) and the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium.

In addition to the team leader Professor Stéphanie Debette several staff members specialized in statistical genetics and epidemiology will be involved. The recruitment and the follow-up of French patients in PRESTIGE-AF will be coordinated by Professor Igor Sibon, director of the stroke unit at Bordeaux University Hospital (CHUB).
