Santa Maria della Misericordia, Azienda Ospedaliera Perugia is the largest tertiary hospital in Umbria, Italy. Santa Maria della Misericordia has 963 beds, highly specialised surgery such as neurosurgery, vascular and cardiac surgery and dedicated intensive care units.

The Stroke Unit is the referral centre for thrombolysis and thrombectomy in Umbria.
Furthermore, the Perugia Stroke Team is currently part of International networks on Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) such as RAF-DOAC, cervical artery dissection CADISP and Intracerebral Haemorrhage (MUCH).

Role in the project

Prof. Valeria Caso, MD, PhD, is work package leader WP10 which is responsible for “Understanding Gender related differences”. WP10 has the following objectives:

  • Increase the awareness of physicians in raising the participation of women to appropriate levels for randomized clinical trials.
  • Increase the awareness among female patients to participate in clinical trials, their adherence to therapy and compliance in chronic diseases.
  • Investigate for biological difference in both sexes in intracerebral haemorrhages, AF and stroke outcomes.
  • Investigates for social-cultural influences in both sexes in stroke outcome
